Equipment Adaptations

Adapted Hand Grip

Do you find it difficult to grasp the shaft of the paddle? Here is an easy and inexpensive adaptation. All it takes is pieces of used mountain bike inner tube and cable/zip ties.

Loosely fasten 2 plastic cable ties around the shaft of the paddle where the paddler places their hand to grasp the paddle. Place a 12” piece of used mountain bike inner tube through the ties. Tighten the cable tie on one side of the paddler’s hand. Stretch the inner tube over the back of the paddler’s hand and hold in place near the second cable tie. Adjust the tension on the inner tube to ensure the paddler can pull their hand out of the grip, than tighten the second cable tie.
Using cable ties that have a release tab permits easy adjustment of the adaptation once on the water.
